The Green City Kigali in collaboration with the University of Rwanda was proud to launch the final exhibition of the Summer School at the School of Architecture and Built Environment in Kigali on 25 July 2019.
The three-week Summer School was the result of a consolidated partnership between the Green City Kigali project and the University of Rwanda, with the aim to strengthen local capacity, knowledge and competences in the field of sustainable urban development. Under the overarching theme of “Kigali as a Sustainable City”, the students were asked to develop affordable housing typologies for the project site in Kinyinya, using the Green City Kigali project as a case study.
The ceremony presented students’ work to national and international stakeholders and was held at the presence of Dr Ignace Gatare, Principal of the College of Science and Technology of the University of Rwanda; Mr Hubert Ruzibiza, CEO of the Rwanda Green Fund, and Ms Dorothea Groth, Head of Development Cooperation at the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany.
“We are already benefiting from this collaboration. With the involvement of the school in environment and climate issues, we hope to draw attention to the way we can build sustainable cities” said Mr Ruzibiza during his opening remarks.
The partnership is also expected to raise awareness about the importance of the Green City Kigali and more broadly sustainable urban development in tackling rabid urbanization and climate change in Rwanda and East Africa.
“[The Green City Kigali] should be a pilot for Rwanda and for the developing world. It should also be a pilot for Africa, as we want to show that we have cities with a good environment for people which can also be environmentally friendly,” said Ms Groth to young students and development practitioners.
