Outreach

Due to the innovative character and the complexity of the project, specifically targeted measures are needed to raise awareness among the local population and to increase the international visibility for both architecture firms and potential investors.

INTERNATIONAL LEVEL AWARENESS RAISING AND ENGAGEMENT

  • Strategic positioning and presence at international events and conferences such as the UN Climate Change Conference (COP 26), the World Urban Forum (WUF 11) and the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM 2022)

LOCAL LEVEL AWARENESS RAISING AND ENGAGEMENT

  • Community service (Umuganda): The monthly community service, called Umuganda in the national language, has established itself as a reliable and efficient tool to promote the active involvement of the local population, facilitate exchange and discussions and build a strong sense of community. Building on this and in close collaboration with the local administration, the Green City Kigali hosted an Umuganda event in January 2020 (with subsequent events unfortunately cancelled due to the COVID 19 pandemic) in the project area of Kinyinya Hill. The goal of this event was to inform the directly affected population about the project and encourage an open dialogue and exchange between all stakeholders.
  • Radio program: In close collaboration with a local radio station, the Green City Kigali produced a monthly radio show consisting of six episodes of thirty minutes. Through a series of interviews, the GCK radio show aimed at informing the audience about Rwanda’s sustainable approach to urban development in an easy and accessible way and in Kinyarwanda. The show addressed questions and concerns from the local population, provided information about climate change and rapid urbanization and introduced concepts such as sustainable building and resource efficiency to a wide and diverse audience.
  • Children’s book: The Green City Kigali together with the Rwandan publishing house Imagine We Rwanda developed a book for children. The goal of the children’s book is to familiarize children and youth with the topic of sustainable urban development and its relevance for Rwanda’s future growth trajectory. Furthermore, the book is aimed at raising environmental awareness and promoting sustainable behavior amongst the young population. The Book has been nominated for The Sustainable Development Goals Book Club African Chapter for books that relate to SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation.
