Affordability

Rwanda as one of the fastest growing economies in Central and East Africa has successfully reduced poverty over the past years. However, it is still a challenge for many to afford housing costs, which are some of the highest in Africa. The availability of finance on affordable terms and the supply of houses accessible to low to middle income households is key to unlocking this challenge. To tackle the issue, the housing mix will foresee a blend of units available to a range of income groups, not just the wealthy. In addition, the new city will take advantage of lower interest mortgage programs that have been put in place by the government and its development partners.

Based on this model, the Green City Kigali suggests a housing mix consisting of both affordable and higher end market rate housing.
