With Rwanda’s vulnerability to climate change impacts, this pillar focuses on reducing carbon emissions and strengthening environmental resilience. Green City Kigali proposes low operational energy buildings and low embodied carbon construction to reduce emissions from both energy use and materials. By incorporating carbon-sequestering materials and nature-based infrastructure systems, the development not only offsets emissions but also enhances ecosystem services. Further, tree and planting-integrated urban design and biodiversity protection and enhancement contribute to cooling urban spaces, managing stormwater, and preserving local species. Additionally, it promotes public and non-motorised transport networks, making mobility accessible and reducing reliance on fossil fuels and carbon emissions. This pillar reflects a deep commitment to building climate-resilient infrastructure and mitigating environmental degradation.
